R4-K5 first servered as a navigator for the Jedi Order during the clone wars. After Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader, he chose R4-K5 to be his droid. When Anakin Skywalker fell to the dark side and became Darth Vader, he cast off his entire past. To further embrace this change, he had a Jedi starfighter painted black to become his Sith starfighter, and selected a similarly dark-hued astromech droid to replace his former droid companion R2-D2. Unlike the jovial, friendly relationship Anakin had with Artoo, Darth Vader regarded R4-K5 as little more than a functional tool.
Behind the Scenes
R4-K5 was described but not named in the pages of the 2005 novel Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader. The droid would be given a name when it was released as an action figure by Hasbro in 2006.
