How to take successful photos at night

Quick Tips for Urban Photography After Dark

what timing !

Before heading out to get some great images of the city after sunset, it is important to make sure you have the proper equipment. This means that you should definitely have a flexible tripod that can adjust to varying heights; a wide-angle lens; some sort of lens hood or a system for directing the flash outside of the frame; and a game plan.

It was a dark and smeggnig freezing morning, I could not feel my nose, but the pictures were so work it. As a learning experience. I have been wanting to to takes these shots since i got the camera. I tried this shot, many times before, and with older point and shoots and failed. I am going to take what i learned and redo these pictures when it's warmer. I also have to read up on night photography.

what i need to work on here is ISO settings at this level of light, better choose what metering to use , Center Weighted or Matrix. Also need to work on exposure settings .

i am not ashamed to say, i screwed up! it's the Reason im a member of Digital-Photography-School , site is such a great help

I  sought out the advice of others at Digital-Photography-School  to learn
Early Morning over Manhattan
What could i have done better?
Well in seeking the wisdom of others i learned
I picked the Wrong Aperture( f/22.0)
Why did you pick f/22? Usually you don't want to shoot with such a small lens opening.
and
Think of this: if you were painting this scene, would you have bothered to put all of that black paint all over the bottom? Does it add anything to the photo? If there's nothing to see there (no reflections in water, perhaps), then it would help a lot to crop it out.

If you had taken your ISO down to 100 or 200, you could have been at a larger aperture and perhaps avoided a little fuzziness as a result.

The Crow FAQ

20091225-DSC_0031, originally uploaded by gservo.

by Crow T. Robot
Hi there, friends! Crow T. Robot here welcoming you to GServo's Photo-Fu Web page! (is he Tom Servos Illegitimate Love Child , if he is, how the hell did he mate with a Fleshy thing?!)

You know, while I had this opportunity I thought I'd address some of the frequently asked questions that people ask me, well, frequently. Here they are, along with my frequent answers:

1. What does the "T" in "Crow T. Robot" stand for? Alas, it stands for "The." But I'm getting a little bored with that, and am considering changing it to something more substantial. Under consideration: "Tyrannosaurus," "Theremin," "Transcendental" and "Tim."

2. Who in show biz has been your greatest inspiration? It's a toss-up between Miles Davis and Miles O' Keefe.

3. Who do you admire most from history? That would have to be Mahatma Gandhi. And probably for the same reasons that so many other people admire him: his scrappiness under the boards. Definitely not a slouch on his outside jumpers, either. But pound-for-pound one of the best defensive players the NBA has ever produced.

4.What projects do you have coming up? I'm glad you asked. Look to your local branch of whatever multi-tentacled corporate bookstore chain you prefer for my upcoming seven-volume biography, "Remembrance of Things Crow," which traces my roots from a humble mining town in Wales, to my Tin-Pan-Alley days, all the way to my complete world domination of all media, everywhere, forever. (I've taken some poetic license with the "facts," but I think it's far more "truthful" that "way.") Also, I'm currently editing my next picture, "Reservoir Crows," which tells the violent-but-pop-culture-soaked tale of the seedy characters who manage our town's water supply.

5. Can you tell us your recipe for happiness? No.

6. I ask again, can you tell us your recipe for happiness? No! Please, leave me alone or I'll call security.

Nice visiting with you! Now get in there and enjoy the heck out of this website!

Be drunk from it (from The Wine Ode (al-Khamriyah))

Be drunk from it,
if only for the life of an hour,
and you will see time a willing slave
under your command.

For there is no life in this world
for one who lives here sober;
who does not die drunk on it,
prudence has passed him by.

So let him weep for himself,
one who wasted his life
never having won a share

R4-K5 first servered as a navigator for the Jedi Order during the clone wars. After Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader, he chose R4-K5 to be his droid. When Anakin Skywalker fell to the dark side and became Darth Vader, he cast off his entire past. To further embrace this change, he had a Jedi starfighter painted black to become his Sith starfighter, and selected a similarly dark-hued astromech droid to replace his former droid companion R2-D2. Unlike the jovial, friendly relationship Anakin had with Artoo, Darth Vader regarded R4-K5 as little more than a functional tool.

Behind the Scenes
R4-K5 was described but not named in the pages of the 2005 novel Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader. The droid would be given a name when it was released as an action figure by Hasbro in 2006.

A Geek Taking pics and tasting @FlyingDog Horn Dog Barley Wine

Tasted By : GServo
20091225-DSC_0010

Location tested: Home at Dining room table, watching Mighty Boosh live, on a cold evening, in New Jersey

20091225-DSC_0020

Special notes: I let this, Flying Dog Horn Dog Barley Wine Sit for Almost a year

20091225-DSC_0018

Got this in a Flying Dog 7oz Canis Major pack

Brewer: Flying Dog Brewery

20091225-DSC_0048

Style/TypeBarely Wine Ale ABV: 10.2%

Package ; amount  7 Oz Bottle

Glass used: Snifter

Appearance (head, color, clarity): The Barley wine Pour a dark slight redish Chocolaty Brown  with a contrasting off white head. It was not a clear bear

20091225-DSC_0052

Aroma/smell: I think because of the almost a year of sitting, it had a smooth Malty Aroma, I let my wife smell it, she’s not a big fan of beer, she thought it smelled good

Taste/Flavor (Sweetness, acidity, bitterness etc): Zomg , let it sit for like a year, crazy, the flavor increased so much, so good, maintained a great sweetness, but was so very smooth

Body/Texture: Great Lightly Syrupy Mouth feel , lightly carbonated
After taste (quick or Long?, Smooth or Harsh?, Hoppy, Malty Roasty?):Smooth Malty after taste, at this sitting

20091225-DSC_0061

Comic Pairing:  This is Would be best, as is, with Conan the Cimmerian from Dark Horse Comics, good well thought out Stories go best with this beer.

Food Pairings: anything Chocolaty would due, for me, Dinner wise, I would love to have this with a Lamb burger with Goat Cheese and caramelized onions.

Overall Impression : FlyingDogs Horn Dog Barley wine, I will let it sit from now on, dear god that's a good glass of ale, when aged.

Company Website/More:  information on beer: By far the biggest dog in the yard... Horn Dog Barley Wine is a dark and malty English-style Barely Wine that is aged for a minimum of three months before being packaged. Like a fine wine, this beer will only get better with age when stored at optimum conditions.

New Morning

20091217-DSC_0026, originally uploaded by gservo.

Poem: "New Every Morning," by Susan Coolidge

Every morning is a fresh beginning,
Listen my soul to the glad refrain.
And, spite of old sorrows
And older sinning,
Troubles forecasted
And possible pain,
Take heart with the day and begin again.

Poem: "If What You're Waiting For Is Christmas,"

20091217-DSC_0038, originally uploaded by gservo.

by David Devine, from The Light of the Morning: Light Rhymes for Hard Times.

If What You're Waiting for is Christmas

If what you're waiting for is Christmas
You don't need me to tell you so
If you've been looking for somebody
You might not have that far to go

See how the candle dances
With all the shadows on the wall
If what you're waiting for is Christmas
It might be coming after all

Sometimes I feel so tired
Sometimes I feel so blue
I'm just going thru the motions
Of almost anything I do

But guess I'm getting better
Even I'm a bit surprised
When I see my own reflection
In a dark haired angel's eyes

Maybe all that really matters
Try to feel the mystery
Found in people left abandoned
Burning, blooming poetry

If for miracles you hunger
You might see a few come true
If what you're waiting for is Christmas
It might be waiting there for you.

Quick Photo FU Thoughts: exercise

Quite the sword, Steady the camera.

Quite the sword, Steady the camera. I believe great image creation can benefits from strength, fitness, coordination, balance, focus and control.

One part of my photo fu training, learning photography, has become exercise. No, not taking pictures of people exercising, actually exercising. Getting in better shape. I think being in better health will help me greatly when creating better images.

The best exercise for photography, in my opinion are pushups. This exercise has the best overall benefits, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pushup)Strengthens the arms, the back, stomach etc. Having strong arms can help you steady your shot.
“Benefits of push ups are so obvious that there is no secrets about them. Plain and simple. You just need to take a few minutes each day to perform them and you are going to see their incredible impact on your body very soon. Every week your could notice great changes on the shape of your body, while watching yourself in the mirror. Every week!”

The other important exercise in photography is walking. This is also very easy. Because you can take your camera with you it also makes Great Photo Fu practice. This does require decent weather though. You can catalog your neighborhood, you can go to other areas, parks, whatever makes you happy and take decent pictures.

bike & beer R&D 009

Another Great exercise I like is bike riding. This is something I don’t carry my DSLR (Cambot Mk3) with, though. I generally have my phone or a point and shot. “The best camera you can have is the one that’s with you” Anyhoo When biking you get places farther, and when you rest, and take pictures, you have a decent map of where you have gone and using a smart phone, you get GPS coordinates to go along with it.

All in all, your physical health should be part of your photography. You can get a lot more done the healthier you are.

Reflections on the first snow of 09

20091219-DSC_0083

The first snow storm of this year, two thousand nine, has come and gone. Snow was blanketing the streets of downtown South Orange by Saturday’s nighttime. It was my first snowfall with Cambot Mk3 . With my Tripod and without, I had excellent opportunities to take pictures. It was also an excellent opportunity to gain Photo Fu knowledge . I was hoping for better pictures, but I did not get close enough with some of my subject matter. I also did not prepare sufficiently, but from time to time the most fun pictures are the ones you don’t really plan out.

20091219-DSC_0080

On the twilight of the beginning of the snowstorm I, from my office window, took shots of the Gaslight pole and fire hydrant outside my house. The illumination of the gaslight made a nice ring and made a slight shadow on the fire hydrant. I had to bump the ISO to 800 and 1000 , and I also pulled out the tripod and remote shutter release . This allowed me to get nice streams of light from transient cars. I took a shot every few hours, till I got tired. I took a few more with the same setup the next morning. It was a nice study in light for me.
20091220-DSC_0102

The Next day, while and after shoveling, I got to take pictures, of people, out doing the work that needed to be done. Digging out from the snow which extensively covered the area ,I now call home. Being cold and wet, I did this ever so quickly, moving from spot to spot in my van, getting shots of the kids sledding down the hill in Cameron park .I wish I would of gotten closer. I also took a small amount of pictures from South Mountain reservation. I hould have had my tripod with me. The Reservation was deceptively cold, but had the possibility for luxurious images

20091220-DSC_0161

What’s the point to this post, oh nothing. I just had good time taking Photos this weekend.

"Snow-Flakes"

20091219-DSC_0064, originally uploaded by gservo.
Poem: "Snow-Flakes" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Public Domain
Snow-Flakes

Out of the bosom of the Air,
Out of the cloud-folds of her garments shaken,
Over the woodlands brown and bare,
Over the harvest-fields forsaken,
Silent, and soft, and slow
Descends the snow.
Even as our cloudy fancies take
Suddenly shape in some divine expression,
Even as the troubled heart doth make
In the white countenance confession,
The troubled sky reveals
The grief it feels.
This is the poem of the air,
Slowly in silent syllables recorded;
This is the secret of despair.
Long in its cloudy bosom hoarded,
Now whispered and revealed
To wood and field.

Bean Peace

20091215-DSC_0085, originally uploaded by gservo.

A poem by Drew K.

A mystery wrapped in brown,
A fragile enigma,
Enveloping the senses,
With the earthy steam
Of a bean.

The mind wrapped in warmth,
The essence of dark roast,
Heating from within,
The senses thrill,
With every lingering
Sniff of the aroma
In the mug

by Maureen O'Connor

I want it hot,
a powerful boiling gift
to lick my tongue
bitter black or
sweet smooth with milk,
essential like water
or life’s blood.
I need it to
percolate my endorphins,
stimulate my senses,
caffeinate my sensibilities
and wake me,
like a good lover.
Then it leaves me
wanting more,
hot.

Poem: "At Tea," by Thomas Hardy, from The Complete Poems. (Macmillan Publishing Co.)
At Tea

The kettle descants in a cosy drone,
And the young wife looks in her husband's face,
And then at her guest's, and shows in her own
Her sense that she fills an envied place;
And the visiting lady is all abloom,
And says there was never so sweet a room.

And the happy young housewife does not know
That the woman beside her was first his choice,
Till the fates ordained it could not be so. ...
Betraying nothing in look or voice
The guest sits smiling and sips her tea,
And he throws her a stray glance yearningly

Beer Bottle

In the burned-
out highway
ditch the throw-

away beer
bottle lands
standing up

unbroken,
like a cat
thrown off

of a roof
to kill it,
landing hard

and dazzled
in the sun
right side up;

sort of a
miracle.

UsedCameras.com (@Used_Cameras on twitter)

Here is a site that caught my eye, http://www.usedcameras.com I am always looking for deals. After going through their site,I can see my self getting something from them in the future.

from their 'About Us' page

Who would have known that in 2002, when Seth and Ellen Schmidt moved the beginnings of UsedCameras.com out of their living room and rented a 600 square foot office in Ashland, Virginia, that we would have grown to be one of the largest used camera dealers in the world. We chose Ashland for it’s small town feel. The locals here call Ashland “The Center of the Universe”. Well it certainly has been the center of our lives for the past seven years.

In the beginning, Seth bought camera gear from folks all over the country and listed it for sale on eBay while Ellen helped with getting the orders out. After only seven months in business, during February 2003, we had our first month of sales over $100,000. We knew then that we were onto something and that this could turn into something big! Over the years, we grew from that small office to our current 27,000 square foot office/warehouse facility. We sold our camera gear on eBay under the seller name, Shutterblade, and became one of the top 50 powersellers worldwide. We are excited about what the future holds for us and the opportunity to serve our customers.

Photo-Fu #Coffee Break - Bodum 16-Ounce Travel Coffee Press

20091207-DSC_0028, originally uploaded by gservo.

To increase the quality of Real Damn Good Coffee I drink, while saving money, I purchased a Bodum 16-Ounce Travel Coffee Press. I like French press coffee, (I REALLY LIKE IT) and needed something portable. This cup fit the bill. The double-wall design allows coffee to stay warm for a good period of time. The travel press makes a great cup, but it is for the experienced. This cup takes some patience, trial and errors, to learn. It’s slightly different than the normal French press.

As is standard, for French presses , it’s Pretty Straight Forward in its use. Take the plunger/filter part out of the cup. Put the Desired amount of course ground coffee into the cup, pour the hot water in. You have to use a plastic spoon with this cup as not to scratch/break it. Let it sit for like 4-5 minutes, put the top on and press the coffee.

Well at that point that’s where gets different. Once more, you need a Course grind for this cup. If you grind the coffee too fine you will get dust, but that really does not matter. When you press the coffee, ground coffee bits will get through the filter edges, especially if rushed. The, easily cleaned, filter/plunger, has a plastic seal is not Perfect. This is my one problem with the cup. I’ve tested similar cups, though, where the seal seemed too tight and you basically had to up screw the top to get it out. I think it’s a catch 22 situation.

Overall the Bodum 16-Ounce Travel Coffee Press makes a Good portable cup of Coffee, just one that’s not meant to be rushed. This Cup requires a little patience, but pays off with a good cup of coffee that’s easily cleaned afterword. It is a worthy vessel for Real Damn good coffee. It’s with me at work every day now and I have carried it with me to diners and other places I would normally buy coffee. Oh yeah, it makes a good cold press coffee too .

Bodum 16-Ounce Travel Coffee Press Product Features
16-ounce travel coffee press with clear tumbler and black lid
3-part built-in filter system allows for brewing and drinking from the same cup
Features spill-resistant lid and insulated double walls to keep coffee hot longer
Equally useful for loose-leaf tea; fits most cup holders
Safe in the dishwasher; models with rubber grip or Bodum logo also available

To a Leaf Falling in Winter

by W. S. Merwin

At sundown when a day's words
have gathered at the feet of the trees
lining up in silence
to enter the long corridors
of the roots into which they
pass one by one thinking
that they remember the place
as they feel themselves climbing
away from their only sound
while they are being forgotten
by their bright circumstances
they rise through all of the rings
listening again
afterward as they
listened once and they come
to where the leaves used to live
during their lives but have gone now
and they too take the next step
beyond the reach of meaning

The trains

Trains

by David Shumate

I am seduced by trains. When one moans in the night like some
dragon gone lame, I rise and put on my grandfather's suit. I pack a
small bag, step out onto the porch, and wait in the darkness. I rest
my broad-brimmed hat on my knee. To a passerby I'm a curious
sight—a solitary man sitting in the night. There's something
unsettling about a traveler who doesn't know where he's headed.
You can't predict his next move. In a week you may receive a
postcard from Haiti. Madagascar. You might turn on your
answering machine and hear his voice amid the tumult of a
Bangkok avenue. All afternoon you feel the weight of the things
you've never done. Don't think about it too much. Everything
starts to sound like a train.
